Sean Buckley is passionate about sports; in particular thoroughbred horse racing. He is the owner of Ultra Thoroughbreds, who run a beautiful stud farm in North East of Victoria known as ‘Barree Stud’.
Ultra Thoroughbred Racing’s aim is to provide affordable ownership opportunities and, by utilising the best trainers in Australia to achieve optimal racetrack success. Outstanding trainers such as Greg Eurell, Wendy Kelly, Danny O Brien, Lee Freedman and Darren Weir see us as a specialist Australian company that can place horses to their best advantage.
Racehorse ownership has its rewards, including the thrills, friendships and memories that are made throughout your horse’s career.
In season 2007/08 over $355 million dollars was distributed in prizemoney with a further $119 million in payouts from various incentive schemes. There are of course several feature (stakes) races on the Australian racing calendar worth a million dollars or more including the Melbourne Cup ($5.1 million), Cox Plate ($3m), Caulfield Cup ($2.5 m), Golden Slipper ($3.5m), the BMW ($2m), Magic Millions ($1.3m), Victoria Derby ($1.5m), Blue Diamond ($1 m) AJC Derby ($1.8m), Doncaster Handicap ($1.8m), Golden Rose ($1m), Stradbroke Handicap ($1m), Caulfield Guineas ($1m), Railway Stakes ($1m), Emirates Stakes ($1m), Newmarket Handicap ($1m), Australian Cup ($1m) etc.
In the happy event your horse reaches these heights, as say Ultra’s Miss Andretti or 2013 Cox Plate Winner Shamus Award, the sky is the limit.
As he did on Cox Plate Day, when he became the first maiden to win Australia’s biggest weight-for-age event, Shamus Award created history with his Guineas win.
He became the first horse to complete the Cox Plate-Australian Guineas double in the same season.
Sean Buckley has had huge success with a range of thoroughbred horses over the years including Culminate, Miss Andretti and Shamus Award. More recently he has purchased Hooked, which is a 4 year old bay stallion from Australia, currently trained by John P Thompson at Randwick. On the 25th October 2014, Craig Williams led the field on Hooked and won the $200,000 Schweppes Crystal Mile.
In recent times, Sean Buckley and Ultra Thoroughbreds have had some major wins including Hooked winning the Tramway Stakes in September 2015 and Thermogenic winning the Henry Bolte Handicap (1600m) in May 2015.
